This project entitled “Designing safe, green and sustainable vessels for Indonesian coastal transport and fishing operations” is jointly researched by University of Strathclyde (UoS) and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) and supported by the British Council.

This project will focus on developing new vessel concept designs by considering the human element with the aim to improve performance of such vessels and well-being of the crew, hence improving the safety, efficiency of operations and environmental protection by using new material such as bamboo. The outcome of this project is to develop a new design concept which will be made freely available to all interested stakeholders in Indonesia, including designers, boatyards as well as local fisherman who build their own boats; this will accelerate the industry take up. In the long term these new vessel designs are expected to improve the fishing operations which will result in safer and more efficient transportation. Without any doubt, in the long term this will have a positive impact in the economic development and social welfare. The framework of this project will be delivered to the Indonesian partner institution in order for them to apply the design, construction and operations framework to other vessel types.
