Dr. Ir. Setyo Nugroho pursued and completed a bachelor and a master degree at the department of marine transportation, the Technische Universiteit Delft (TU Delft), the Netherlands, in 1993. Between 1993-1997, he worked at PT Meratus Line, a local container shipping company in Surabaya, At the Department of Operations, he was responsible for the an array of operational activities including scheduling, bunkering, agency and logistic project management. Starting from 1999 till 2005 he pursued a doctoral degree at the Department of Marine Transport, at Thecnische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), Germany. Parallel to his doctoral research, he worked as a research staff conducting a joint research project between TU Berlin, TU Hamburg-Harburg and Muller+ Blanck to develop a new algorithm of stowage planning for container ships, 2001-2004. He filed a German patent application on his Case-Based Stowage Planning System at the German Patent Office (DPMA) and an international one at the European Patent Office (EPA), in 2004 and 2005 respectively. He currently leads the Marine Transport Telematics Laboratory of the Department of Marine Transport Engineering, at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya. Apart from lecturing on Marine Transport Modelling, Shipping, Marine Transport Telematics and Research Methodology, he conducts a research in the fields of Intelligent Transportation Systems, including iStow (stowage planning tool development), Digital Island (ICT-based solutions for small islands), traditional shipping operations. Following a managerial position as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Marine Technology, 2011-2015, he is occupied with the Sustainable Island Development Initiatives (SIDI). SIDI is an international research collaboration aiming to contribute solutions and ideas to develop a small island in a sustainable way, since 2012.
